After a few rainy days, the photographer was able to admire San Marino floating in a sea of fog, which he captured and compiled a spectacular time-lapse video of his shots of Monte Titano and its surroundings.

The small country has a population of nearly 32,000, with the two most populous cities being San Marino (the capital) and Serravalle, which has a population larger than the capital. San Marino is the third smallest state in Europe, smaller only than Monaco and the Vatican. It was the smallest republic in the world from 301 until Nauru became independent in 1968. San Marino is a parliamentary republic with one of the oldest republican constitutions in the world, dating back to 1244.

As you wander through the narrow streets of San Marino, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The cobblestone roads, the ancient castles, the stunning views – it’s all so surreal. The more than 2000-year-old Vatican officially formed as an indapendent state within Italy in 1929 when Pope XI. Pius entered into a contract with Italian government. It was built on Vatican hill, where in 64 AC a lot of Christians were massacred by Nero’s command. According to the Catholic religion one of the martyrs was Apostle Peter, the later St. Peter, the first pope. The area of Vatican was many times larger in the middle of the 19th century than now (0,44 km2), today the number of its inhabitants is 800 – most of them are pope’s stuff and other majority church officials – they easily would fit in a larger New York apartment. Vatican City is enjoying full autonomy, has its own money, stamp, telephone- and television companies and even has its own army. Its protection is provided by the famous Swiss Guard.

Each year more than 4 million people visit the most sacred place of Catholicism. Among them there are at least as many pilgrims as tourists, who are primarily attracted by Vatican’s unique art collections. One of the major attractions not only of Citta del Vaticano but also of Rome is St. Peter’s Basilica, the most important among every Catholic church in the world which – as for the religion – was built up by Emperor Constantine above Apostle Peter’s tomb. Altough the Sistine Chapel is always crowded, it worths to wait, because nobody shouldn’t leave Vatican City without visit the chapel with the frescoes which was created for 4 years by Michelangelo. His most important works can be seen here together with famous Renessaince paintings. The chapel not only home of priceless monuments and one of the world most famous attractions, but the Sistine Chapel, built in 1475-1481, has an important function: the papal elections take place here.

Colosseum

This is the most special Roman monument. Not only its size and the whole complex is incredible, but also the bloody story of the walls. Thousends of convicted prisoners and slaves fought here with each other and with starving lions to entertain the aristocratic audience. Originally the gladiator games last 100 days and 100 night until the 6th century, when with the fall of the Empire the Colosseum was abandoned. In the Middle Ages it was a fortress but was badly damaged over the time due to numerous earthquakes. From its walls most of the marble and limestone blocks were removed. More than 2000 years of history still fascinate people. Since 2010 visitors have more opportunity to discover the Colossuem because then opened those tunnels to the public where gladiators and wild animals was waited for their fate.

Palatinus Hill

This was the Beverly Hills of the ancient Rome. 753 BC the city was founded here, 200 years later the richest residents lived here. The Stadio was probably used by emperors as a location of games and private events. In the opposite there is Domus Augustana with the remains of the imperial home. Palatinus Hill can be a beautiful background of a pleasant picnic, under the shade of the green hill, under the palm trees surrounded by imperial ruins.

Frescos of Palazzo Massimo alle Terme

Only a few tourist visit one of the most beautiful museums in Rome. Here we can see the treasures of 7 centuries, like statues, marble mosaic strips from the 2th century BC. However, great frescos and mosaics exhibited on the second floor of the building excel everthing else. The colourful frescoes which once decoreted Augustanera Villa also can be seen here. The wall of the dormitory was decorated with religous, theatrical and erotic themes, the dining room was adorned by landscapes. In Villa Livia, the house of Augustus’s wife, Livia Drusilla, garden paintings were found which also worth a visit. They were discovered in the 19th century, and placed here in the museum in 1951.

 Altough the competition is very tight, but undoubtedly the Pantheon is the most beautiful building of the ancient Rome. It can be considered as the most important architectual performance of Romans, because until the 15. century this building had the biggest dome in the world and still today it has the largest unstrenghten dome ever built.  From the 12th century basilica of San Clemente we can reach the 4the century temple of Mithras over a few steps. Then we can enter into a Roman house from the 1st century, which hides also a small temple of Mithras. Among the Roman soldiers, the Mithras cult was very popular.
