Dutch photographer Rick Kloekke was greeted by a wonderful sight when he visited his family in San Marino, one of the smallest countries in the world. After a few rainy days, the photographer was able to admire San Marino floating in a sea of fog, which he captured and compiled a spectacular time-lapse video of his shots of Monte Titano and its surroundings.

The small country has a population of nearly 32,000, with the two most populous cities being San Marino (the capital) and Serravalle, which has a population larger than the capital. San Marino is the third smallest state in Europe, smaller only than Monaco and the Vatican. It was the smallest republic in the world from 301 until Nauru became independent in 1968. San Marino is a parliamentary republic with one of the oldest republican constitutions in the world, dating back to 1244.

As you wander through the narrow streets of San Marino, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The cobblestone roads, the ancient castles, the stunning views – it’s all so surreal. And let’s not forget the food! San Marino has some seriously delicious cuisine, from the hearty pasta dishes to the mouthwatering gelato.

San Marino is an enclave of Italy, on the border between the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche. Its topography is dominated by the Apennines, the highest point being Monte Titano at 749 metres. At the top of Monte Titano you can see an 11th century and a 13th century fortress.

Tourism is very important, with more than 3 million tourists visiting San Marino every year. The main attractions of the country, apart from its natural beauty, are to be found in San Marino, with its medieval old town surrounded by a medieval wall and hundreds of years old buildings and churches.

But we know you’re interested in the video, so without further ado, here’s the amazing film

This bustling pizzeria is the place to be if you’re looking for hot, sizzling, and absolutely delectable pizzas that’ll have you smacking your lips in satisfaction.

First up on our menu is the mouth-watering “Coda alla Vaccinara”, a slow-cooked oxtail stew that’s so flavorful, you’ll be licking your lips for days. Trust me, this is not your grandma’s stew. Each bite is packed with tender, juicy meat and a rich, savory sauce that will have you swooning.

And don’t forget about the “Saltimbocca alla Romana”, a dish made with thin slices of veal, prosciutto, and sage. This dish is a symphony of flavors that will have you singing with joy. It’s the perfect balance of salty, savory, and just a hint of herbs to give it that extra pizzazz.

5. Giolitti – For gelato

That’s right folks, this place has been a local favorite for a solid century and counting, and we’re here to tell you why.

Gelatos / credit: giolitti.it

First things first, Giolitti is a flavor wonderland, where you’ll find gelato in every hue and taste under the sun. From classic and comforting vanilla to daring and delightful creations like “crema di Giolitti,” a creamy custard flavor that will leave you in a state of pure bliss. And the flavor combinations are so good, you’ll be hard-pressed to choose just one.

Giolitti also offers three ways to enjoy their gelato: in a cone, in a cup, or sandwiched between two warm, fluffy wafers. Can you even imagine the goodness? It’s like a gelato sandwich! The perfect dessert trifecta, if you will.

So, if you’re looking for a sweet and savory adventure in the heart of Rome, look no further than Giolitti. This historic gelateria will tantalize your taste buds and leave you smiling from ear to ear.

When someone arrives home from Rome and says he didn’t visit Colosseum or has no idea if he saw the Trevi fountain among the others, people will think he is...

When someone arrives home from Rome and says he didn’t visit Colosseum or has no idea if he saw the Trevi fountain among the others, people will think he is weird. Rome is full of must see attractions, include Vatican, what to miss would be a sin if we are in the capital of Italy. Whe hearing its name most people immediately think about the Chatolic religion, that this is the seat of the Pope, but the real highlight of Vatican City is the interweave of religion and art in a supremely high standard. Many of Rome’s attractions can be found in this tiny state and if someone is susceptible to the arts, only a few hours won’t be enough for him to discover every beauty of Vatican City.

The more than 2000-year-old Vatican officially formed as an indapendent state within Italy in 1929 when Pope XI. Pius entered into a contract with Italian government. It was built on Vatican hill, where in 64 AC a lot of Christians were massacred by Nero’s command. According to the Catholic religion one of the martyrs was Apostle Peter, the later St. Peter, the first pope. The area of Vatican was many times larger in the middle of the 19th century than now (0,44 km2), today the number of its inhabitants is 800 – most of them are pope’s stuff and other majority church officials – they easily would fit in a larger New York apartment. Vatican City is enjoying full autonomy, has its own money, stamp, telephone- and television companies and even has its own army. Its protection is provided by the famous Swiss Guard.

Each year more than 4 million people visit the most sacred place of Catholicism. Among them there are at least as many pilgrims as tourists, who are primarily attracted by Vatican’s unique art collections. One of the major attractions not only of Citta del Vaticano but also of Rome is St. Peter’s Basilica, the most important among every Catholic church in the world which – as for the religion – was built up by Emperor Constantine above Apostle Peter’s tomb. The exact date when the construction started is unknown. Presumably the foundating stones were laid between 319-322. The building is so monumental that it’s almost impossible do discover all the details, altough such masterworks can be seen here as Michelangelo’s, Bernini’s, Bramante’s and Raffaello’s.

In one of the biggest Catholich church of the world it’s very hard to decide where to look, to discover every marbles, mosaics, works of art would take many hours. In grottos under the Basilica we can see tombs and sarkophagi of popes – allegedly includes St. Peter’s tomb. The entrance to the Basilica is free, but we suggest to pay attention what to wear. Strict rules apply for men and women, doesn’t allow to wear short skirt, short, sleeveless T-shirt.

The huge and imposing square in front of the Basilica also bears St. Peter’s name. The elliptical square is surrounded 13 m tall Doric column on both sides. Because of tourists the square is very busy all year round, but at Chrismas and Easter is much more crowdy. From all over the world hundreds of thousands of people come to hear the papal blessing. In the middle of the square stands an ancient obelisque, which was shipped here from the Egyptian Hieropolis, the Nile Delta region.

Altough the Sistine Chapel is always crowded, it worths to wait, because nobody shouldn’t leave Vatican City without visit the chapel with the frescoes which was created for 4 years by Michelangelo. His most important works can be seen here together with famous Renessaince paintings. The chapel not only home of priceless monuments and one of the world most famous attractions, but the Sistine Chapel, built in 1475-1481, has an important function: the papal elections take place here.

Sistine Chapel – Last Judgement

The Sistine Chapel is the part of Vatican Museum. This a complex collection of ancient Roman, Greek, Etrusc monuments, early Christians and medieval Renessaince masterpieces and other monuments until the 19th century. Sure we can’t visit everything in a single day, better if we select the most interesting collections before. Vatican Museum can be visit free on the last Sunday of every month.

Vatican Museum

Vatican city is a fascinating destination, so it’s a good idea to planning the sightseeing in advance, to make sure to visit the most important attractions. Vatican’s travel agency located on the left side of the St. Peter Square, best to start the walk here. In the tourist office we can buy maps, guidebooks, but also can book for a nice trip to the Vatican Gardens. Here we find the most beautiful examples of the 1500-1600’s years Italian gardening as well as Pope IV. Pius’s summer residence. If we would like to send a posctard home, use the Vatican Post which is more relieable than the Italian.

Every region of Italy is blessed with countless historic attractions, the capital itself has especially a huge amount of monuments. To fall in love with Rome is not so hard. Just about every corner we can meet masterpieces, this is why it is said that a lifetime can’t be enough to fully discover Rome. The best thing we can do – altough with a heavy heart – to select from the attractions and reserve something for the next trip, because it’s sure we want to come back again and again.

Colosseum

This is the most special Roman monument. Not only its size and the whole complex is incredible, but also the bloody story of the walls. Thousends of convicted prisoners and slaves fought here with each other and with starving lions to entertain the aristocratic audience. Originally the gladiator games last 100 days and 100 night until the 6th century, when with the fall of the Empire the Colosseum was abandoned. In the Middle Ages it was a fortress but was badly damaged over the time due to numerous earthquakes. From its walls most of the marble and limestone blocks were removed. More than 2000 years of history still fascinate people. Since 2010 visitors have more opportunity to discover the Colossuem because then opened those tunnels to the public where gladiators and wild animals was waited for their fate.

Palatinus Hill

This was the Beverly Hills of the ancient Rome. 753 BC the city was founded here, 200 years later the richest residents lived here. The Stadio was probably used by emperors as a location of games and private events. In the opposite there is Domus Augustana with the remains of the imperial home. Palatinus Hill can be a beautiful background of a pleasant picnic, under the shade of the green hill, under the palm trees surrounded by imperial ruins.

Frescos of Palazzo Massimo alle Terme

Only a few tourist visit one of the most beautiful museums in Rome. Here we can see the treasures of 7 centuries, like statues, marble mosaic strips from the 2th century BC. However, great frescos and mosaics exhibited on the second floor of the building excel everthing else. The colourful frescoes which once decoreted Augustanera Villa also can be seen here. The wall of the dormitory was decorated with religous, theatrical and erotic themes, the dining room was adorned by landscapes. In Villa Livia, the house of Augustus’s wife, Livia Drusilla, garden paintings were found which also worth a visit. They were discovered in the 19th century, and placed here in the museum in 1951.

Pantheon

Altough the competition is very tight, but undoubtedly the Pantheon is the most beautiful building of the ancient Rome. It can be considered as the most important architectual performance of Romans, because until the 15. century this building had the biggest dome in the world and still today it has the largest unstrenghten dome ever built. The view is more harmonic by the symmetrical arrangement, because the diameter of the Pantheon is exactly the same size as its height, 43,3 m.

Temple of Mithras under basilica of San Clemente

From the 12th century basilica of San Clemente we can reach the 4the century temple of Mithras over a few steps. Then we can enter into a Roman house from the 1st century, which hides also a small temple of Mithras. Among the Roman soldiers, the Mithras cult was very popular. These temples are dark and lie deep under the ground, cave-like. This temple is also very mysterious, all the more because we can take a wonderful journey in different periods of history.
