<p>The beauty of Meteora doesn&#8217;t end at its picturesque landscape though; its architecture is truly something special too! Each monastery boasts intricate stonework, spectacular frescoes and other works of art which will transport you back in time. If possible, try and visit during religious holidays when services are held as this will give you a true insight into what life was like centuries ago.</p>

<p>Meteora may not be one of Greece&#8217;s most well-known attractions but it&#8217;s certainly worth discovering &#8211; especially if travelling off-the-beaten path is more your thing! Its dramatic scenery combined with rich culture make it a must-visit location for anyone who wants to explore beyond the tourist hotspots. Plus it offers some much needed peace and quiet away from city life; allowing visitors to reconnect with themselves and their surroundings in a unique way.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">History Of The Meteora Region</h2>

<p>The Meteora region of Greece is home to an incredible history and a unique geological formation. This area has been inhabited since ancient times, but it wasn&#8217;t until the 14th century that its rock monasteries – some of which are still standing today – became part of the landscape. Let&#8217;s take a closer look at the rich background behind this stunning destination.</p>

<p>The earliest known inhabitants in the Meteora region were Neolithic people who likely settled there due to its strategic location atop high rocks. The first mention of these tribes dates back to around 1250 BCE, when Homer wrote about them in his epics. Throughout much of antiquity, however, very few people lived in or visited the area. That began to change with the arrival of Orthodox monks in the late 13th century CE.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignfull size-full"><a href="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Hermit-monks-seeking-solitude-in-the-9th-century-climb-the-Meteora-rock-pillars-with-their-bare-hands.jpg"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="784" src="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Hermit-monks-seeking-solitude-in-the-9th-century-climb-the-Meteora-rock-pillars-with-their-bare-hands.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1035" srcset="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Hermit-monks-seeking-solitude-in-the-9th-century-climb-the-Meteora-rock-pillars-with-their-bare-hands.jpg 1024w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Hermit-monks-seeking-solitude-in-the-9th-century-climb-the-Meteora-rock-pillars-with-their-bare-hands-300x230.jpg 300w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Hermit-monks-seeking-solitude-in-the-9th-century-climb-the-Meteora-rock-pillars-with-their-bare-hands-768x588.jpg 768w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Hermit-monks-seeking-solitude-in-the-9th-century-climb-the-Meteora-rock-pillars-with-their-bare-hands-760x582.jpg 760w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Hermit-monks-seeking-solitude-in-the-9th-century-climb-the-Meteora-rock-pillars-with-their-bare-hands-370x283.jpg 370w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Illustration: Hermit monks, seeking solitude in the 9th century, climb the Meteora rock pillars with their bare hands</figcaption></figure>

<p>At first, these monks chose not to live on top of the rocks; instead they stayed in caves nearby and built small hermitages for their retreats from society. But as time went on, more and more monks started moving onto the rocks themselves, building elaborate complexes complete with chapels and living quarters carved into solid stone walls. By the end of the 15th century, 24 such structures had been completed throughout what is now called Meteora National Park – all connected by precarious hand-hewn staircases leading up hundreds of feet above sea level!</p>

<p>Today, visitors can explore many different parts of Meteora’s awe-inspiring past while taking in breathtaking views along their journey across rocky terrain and winding pathways up steep cliffsides. From old fortresses dotted along sharp ridges overlooking lush valleys below to centuries-old churches perched atop sheer cliff faces surrounded by wild wilderness – each stop promises unforgettable experiences sure to stir any traveler’s soul with a newfound appreciation for life&#8217;s beauty and freedom.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Spectacular Views Of The Surrounding Landscape</h2>

<p>The Meteora region of Greece is renowned for its spectacular views. Nestled in the foothills of Thessaly, this unique landscape offers visitors an unforgettable experience.</p>

<p>From atop these rocky monasteries, you can gaze out at a breathtaking tapestry of rolling hills and sheer cliffs that seem to reach up towards the sky. Colorful villages dotting this picturesque scenery make it all the more remarkable.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">St. Nikolaos Anapafsas Monastery</h2>

<p>Nestled in the rocky hills of Meteora, Greece, is St. Nikolaos Anapafsas Monastery – a stunningly beautiful monument to centuries of religious and spiritual devotion. The monastery has a long history stretching back to the 16th century when it was founded by a monk from Mount Athos. Today, visitors can still experience an atmosphere of peace and tranquility as they wander through its ancient hallways and admire its magnificent views over the surrounding landscape.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignfull size-full"><a href="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/St.-Nikolaos-Anapafsas-Monastery-Earthismyhome.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="865" src="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/St.-Nikolaos-Anapafsas-Monastery-Earthismyhome.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1026" srcset="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/St.-Nikolaos-Anapafsas-Monastery-Earthismyhome.jpg 800w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/St.-Nikolaos-Anapafsas-Monastery-Earthismyhome-277x300.jpg 277w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/St.-Nikolaos-Anapafsas-Monastery-Earthismyhome-768x830.jpg 768w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/St.-Nikolaos-Anapafsas-Monastery-Earthismyhome-760x822.jpg 760w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/St.-Nikolaos-Anapafsas-Monastery-Earthismyhome-370x400.jpg 370w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></a></figure>

<p>As small in width as it is tall in length, the building could only grow upwards because of the limited space. You can see this in the photos of it. The monastery of Aigios Nikolaos Anapafsas is the first active building on the road to Meteora and was built in the 14th century. There are several stories about the origin of its name. According to one, Anapafsas refers to the patron who gave money to build the monastery, while another refers to the location of the monastery.</p>

<p>The monastery of Agios Nikolaos is the first of the Meteora monasteries where pilgrims could rest after reaching the rock forest. The Greek word for rest is anapafsis, so the name of the monastery literally translates as &#8216;St Nicholas, with whom you can rest&#8217;.</p>

<p>The name ‘Anapafsas’ comes from Greek words meaning ‘to be carried away’ and this sense of being transported to another world pervades throughout the building. Inside are intricately decorated chapels, soaring arches and frescoes depicting biblical scenes; all adding to the serene atmosphere that envelops you upon arrival. For those looking for more than just sightseeing opportunities, the monastery also provides some wonderful opportunities for reflection too &#8211; such as meditation classes or yoga retreats held at various times throughout the year.</p>

<p>At first glance, St Nikolaos Anapafsas may seem like any other monastery but delve deeper into its past and you will uncover something truly unique about this place. Its impressive library houses one-of-a-kind manuscripts dating back to 1420 AD which offer insights into Byzantine life during that era in addition to rare books on theology and philosophy. It’s almost impossible not to be moved by these documents!</p>

Join us as we explore the majestic Greek region whose monasteries seem to float in the sky.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The History of Meteora</h2>

<p>Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is known for its picturesque monasteries perched atop its vertical rock pillars. In the 9th century, hermit monks seeking solitude originally ascended these soaring cliffs. <strong>It is believed that they first climbed the cliffs with their bare hands, grabbing trees and rocks until they eventually carved out homes in the cliffside and nestled in small caves and crevices.</strong> They lived lives of seclusion and isolation, only occasionally exiting their caves to worship and pray.</p>

In total, there are twenty-four Byzantine monasteries, of which only five are still used by monks.</figcaption></figure>

<p>To appreciate how these remarkable monasteries were eventually built, a quick history lesson is in order. By the end of the 14th century, the Byzantine Empire&#8217;s 800-year reign was drawing to an end, with Turkish invaders increasingly besieging monastic communities in Greece. Hermit monks seeking safety from the then-ruling Ottoman Empire hid in plain sight and settled atop the impassable limestone cliffs of Meteora.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Construction of the Monasteries</h2>

<p>Building monasteries in the middle of the sky is a herculean task and without access to present day technology like helicopters and airplanes, it is not known exactly how the ancient monks actually constructed the monasteries. <strong>It is believed that most of the monasteries were constructed over the course of 20 or more years, with each brick, mortar, and other materials being hauled atop the cliffs via nets, hooks, buckets, and ropes.</strong> More than 20 monasteries of various sizes were miraculously built by the monks on top of the cliffs, risking their lives in the process. While it is not known how many monks died during construction, it was surely a treacherous and deadly endeavor.</p>

<p>Despite the lack of steps and limited access to the outside world, the monastic communities of Meteora thrived. </p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-style-plain is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p>Using scaffolds for climbing and getting supplies, 40 meter long extendable wooden ladders, and by using nets tied to a hook and hoisted up and down by a rope or retractable ladders, the monks would thrive in safety on the cliff tops.</p>
</blockquote>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Resurgence and Decline</h2>

<p>Following a period of decline in the 15th century, the settlements of Meteora saw a brief resurgence in the 16th century when Meteora became a refuge center for Greeks fleeing the Ottoman Empire&#8217;s brutal dominion. Since it was one of only a few sites where Hellenic culture was preserved, it attracted not only the faithful but also poets, philosophers, and philosophical thinkers. Some argue that Hellenic traditions and culture would have completely vanished if it weren&#8217;t for the Meteora monasteries.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignfull size-large"><a href="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Theophanes-Paint.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="611" src="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Theophanes-Paint-1024x611.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1016" srcset="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Theophanes-Paint-1024x611.jpg 1024w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Theophanes-Paint-300x179.jpg 300w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Theophanes-Paint-768x458.jpg 768w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Theophanes-Paint-1536x916.jpg 1536w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Theophanes-Paint-1250x745.jpg 1250w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Theophanes-Paint-760x453.jpg 760w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Theophanes-Paint-370x221.jpg 370w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Theophanes-Paint.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Hagiography of the Monastery was completed by Theophanis the Cretan. © visitmeteora.travel</figcaption></figure>

<p>While the monasteries of Meteora were quite safe, they were not immune to attacks from invading thieves and conquerors. As a result, over the centuries, many of Meteora&#8217;s monasteries were either abandoned or destructed. <strong>During World War II, the site was severely destroyed and numerous artifacts were stolen.</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Present-Day Monasteries</h2>

<p>Although at least 30 monasteries were built over the course of history at Meteora, only six monasteries remain: the Great Meteoron (also known as All Saints), St. Nicholas Anapausas, Holy Trinity, St. Stephen, Rousanou, and Varlaam. While some of the monasteries still serve religious functions, most are only sparsely populated by monks and nuns.</p>

<p><strong>The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron</strong>, built by Saint Athanasios in the 14th century, is the highest, largest, and oldest of the six. The ancient bread oven and soup part can still be found in the smoke-filled kitchen, and former monastery monks are buried in the sacristy with their skulls and bones neatly piled on shelves.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignfull size-large"><a href="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Holy-Monastery-of-Great-Meteoron-Greece-Earthismyhome.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Holy-Monastery-of-Great-Meteoron-Greece-Earthismyhome-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1017" srcset="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Holy-Monastery-of-Great-Meteoron-Greece-Earthismyhome-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Holy-Monastery-of-Great-Meteoron-Greece-Earthismyhome-300x169.jpg 300w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Holy-Monastery-of-Great-Meteoron-Greece-Earthismyhome-768x432.jpg 768w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Holy-Monastery-of-Great-Meteoron-Greece-Earthismyhome-1250x703.jpg 1250w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Holy-Monastery-of-Great-Meteoron-Greece-Earthismyhome-1170x658.jpg 1170w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Holy-Monastery-of-Great-Meteoron-Greece-Earthismyhome-760x427.jpg 760w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Holy-Monastery-of-Great-Meteoron-Greece-Earthismyhome-370x208.jpg 370w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Holy-Monastery-of-Great-Meteoron-Greece-Earthismyhome-270x152.jpg 270w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Holy-Monastery-of-Great-Meteoron-Greece-Earthismyhome.jpg 1506w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron</strong> / Credit: Peso</figcaption></figure>

<p><strong>Holy Monastery&nbsp;of&nbsp;Varlaam</strong> is the second largest, and in the 16th century, two wealthy monks took over the site and it took more than 20 years to carry all of the building materials to the top. The original rope basket used to lift the supplies can still be seen.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignfull size-large"><a href="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Meteora-Monastery-of-Varlaam-Earth-is-My-Home.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Meteora-Monastery-of-Varlaam-Earth-is-My-Home-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1018" srcset="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Meteora-Monastery-of-Varlaam-Earth-is-My-Home-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Meteora-Monastery-of-Varlaam-Earth-is-My-Home-300x169.jpg 300w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Meteora-Monastery-of-Varlaam-Earth-is-My-Home-768x432.jpg 768w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Meteora-Monastery-of-Varlaam-Earth-is-My-Home-1250x703.jpg 1250w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Meteora-Monastery-of-Varlaam-Earth-is-My-Home-1170x658.jpg 1170w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Meteora-Monastery-of-Varlaam-Earth-is-My-Home-760x427.jpg 760w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Meteora-Monastery-of-Varlaam-Earth-is-My-Home-370x208.jpg 370w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Meteora-Monastery-of-Varlaam-Earth-is-My-Home-270x152.jpg 270w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Meteora-Monastery-of-Varlaam-Earth-is-My-Home.jpg 1506w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong><strong>Holy Monastery of Varlaam</strong></strong> / credit: Peso</figcaption></figure>

<p><strong>Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas monastery</strong> has a single-naved church with a small dome decorated by the Cretan painter Theophanes the Monk in the 16th century. <strong>Monastery of the Holy Trinity</strong> is one of the least visited since it is the most difficult to reach, requiring a steep climb of 140 steps.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignfull size-large"><a href="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Monastery-of-the-Holy-Trinity-Greece-EarthIsMyHome.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Monastery-of-the-Holy-Trinity-Greece-EarthIsMyHome-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1019" srcset="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Monastery-of-the-Holy-Trinity-Greece-EarthIsMyHome-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Monastery-of-the-Holy-Trinity-Greece-EarthIsMyHome-300x169.jpg 300w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Monastery-of-the-Holy-Trinity-Greece-EarthIsMyHome-768x432.jpg 768w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Monastery-of-the-Holy-Trinity-Greece-EarthIsMyHome-1250x703.jpg 1250w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Monastery-of-the-Holy-Trinity-Greece-EarthIsMyHome-1170x658.jpg 1170w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Monastery-of-the-Holy-Trinity-Greece-EarthIsMyHome-760x427.jpg 760w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Monastery-of-the-Holy-Trinity-Greece-EarthIsMyHome-370x208.jpg 370w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Monastery-of-the-Holy-Trinity-Greece-EarthIsMyHome-270x152.jpg 270w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/Monastery-of-the-Holy-Trinity-Greece-EarthIsMyHome.jpg 1506w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Monastery of the Holy Trinity</strong> / credit: Peso</figcaption></figure>

<p>The last of the monasteries, the <strong>Holy Monastery of St. Stephen</strong>, which dates back to the 1400s, is now a convent with stunning views of the Pineios River and is the only monastery where visitors can visit without using stairs.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Accessing the Monasteries</h2>

<p>Since the construction of paved roads through the Meteora area in the 1960s, it has been visited annually by thousands of tourists. The monasteries are easily accessible by bridges and stairs cut into the rocks. Before the 1920s, ascending the rock columns involved a perilous enterprise of climbing ladders or being hauled up by ropes and nets.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Conservation Efforts</h2>

<p>Conservation efforts have been ongoing since 1972 to counter overall decay and the destruction incurred during World War II when the area was bombed by the German military. Ongoing threats to the structures include vibrations caused by low-flying aircraft and damage relating to the area&#8217;s frequent tremors and earthquakes.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Visiting Meteora</h2>

<p>With an entrance fee of 3 € per person per monastery, a visit to Meteora is both inexpensive and potentially life-changing. Although the climb up to most of these monasteries is strenuous, but when you get up there you&#8217;ll say it was worth it. The view from the top is breathtaking, and you will feel like you are on top of the world, surrounded by nature and a serene atmosphere. Visitors can explore the monasteries and learn about the rich history and cultural significance of the site. They can also admire the stunning Byzantine art and artifacts that are housed in each monastery.</p>

<p>Fava beans, also known as yellow split peas, are a staple in Greek cuisine and can be found in a variety of dishes. But in Santorini, they&#8217;re particularly special. The volcanic soil of the island provides the perfect environment for growing these little legumes, and the result is a fava that&#8217;s creamier, sweeter, and nuttier than what you&#8217;ll find anywhere else.</p>
<p>So, how do you enjoy this local delicacy? Well, for starters, you can find fava as a side dish in many restaurants. It&#8217;s usually served warm, seasoned with olive oil and lemon, and topped with a sprinkle of onions and herbs. Trust us, your taste buds will dance with joy.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_679" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-679" style="width: 700px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/fava.webp"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-679 size-full" src="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/fava.webp" alt="" width="700" height="467" srcset="https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/fava.webp 700w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/fava-300x200.webp 300w, https://earthismyhome.com/wp-content/uploads/fava-370x247.webp 370w" sizes="(max-width: 767px) 100vw, 700px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-679" class="wp-caption-text">Santorini&#8217;s fava</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>But the real magic happens when you try Santorini&#8217;s fava dip. Think of it as a Greek version of hummus, but even more delicious. It&#8217;s smooth, creamy, and has just the right balance of tang and nuttiness. Serve it with some fresh pita bread, and you&#8217;ve got yourself a snack that&#8217;ll have you singing odes to the gods.</p>
<p>And if you&#8217;re feeling adventurous, why not take a cooking class and learn how to make fava from scratch? You&#8217;ll get to shop for the ingredients at a local market, learn about the different varieties of beans, and taste test your way through the process. It&#8217;s a hands-on, flavorful experience that you won&#8217;t soon forget.</p>
<p>Add trying fava beans to your Santorini bucket list, and get ready for a taste sensation like no other.</p>
