Europe is home to some of the most incredible cities in the world – from timeless classics like Paris and Rome, to vibrant hubs like London and Berlin. But behind this façade of beauty lies a sinister side; with Europe’s ten deadliest cities lurking beneath its polished veneer. Numbeo has carried out a comprehensive survey to identify the most dangerous cities in Europe. So buckle up, because you’re about to take a tour through an underworld of danger and crime unlike anything you’ve ever seen before!

Crime levels are always changing, but there are certain European cities that have become notorious for their high levels of violence over the years. Here we will explore exactly what makes these places so dangerous, and which cities made it onto our list as being among Europe’s top ten riskiest places. From gang-run streets teeming with drug dealers, to areas where even police fear to tread – get ready for an eye-opening journey into Europe’s dark side.

So let us begin by taking a closer look at just how bad things can get in some parts of Europe – prepare for shock and awe as we reveal Europe’s 10 most dangerous cities!

10. Nice, France

Nice, France is one of Europe’s most dangerous cities. It has a thriving drug trade and a high crime rate. The city also suffers from gang violence and rampant poverty.

Although it was ranked last on the list of Europe’s most dangerous cities, Nice still confronts issues of minor criminal activities and sporadic instances of urban violence. Nonetheless, the city’s picturesque Mediterranean coastline, lively cultural scene, and pleasant climate continue to attract a significant number of tourists.

The police force in Nice struggles to keep up with the level of criminal activity. In particular, they are ill-equipped to deal with serious crimes such as robberies and murders. There have been several reports of shootouts between rival gangs in recent years.

Furthermore, there is an alarming amount of human trafficking taking place in Nice. This includes sexual exploitation, forced labor, and child labor. Human rights activists have raised concerns about the lack of laws governing these activities in the city. With all that said, it’s clear why Nice is rated as one of Europe’s most dangerous cities.

9. Liège, Belgium

Liège, Belgium has been named one of Europe’s ten most dangerous cities. This small city in the Liège province is no stranger to crime and violence. It has a history of gang warfare, random attacks, and general lawlessness that give it an air of danger and unease.

Liège, a historic city in eastern Belgium, has been ranked as the 9th most dangerous city in Europe due to high levels of crime, including organized gang activity and drug trafficking, but its rich cultural heritage and lively nightlife continue to attract visitors and locals alike.

One example of this rampant violence can be seen in the 2018 attack on Liège’s Christmas market by Benjamin Herman, who killed three people before being shot dead by police. The incident shocked citizens and highlighted how quickly violent events can take place within the city walls.

Not only are there incidents like these that plague Liege regularly, but everyday life here often involves struggles with poverty and unemployment. As such, many residents turn to criminal activities to make ends meet – further heightening the sense of danger for visitors or those new to Liege. Without sufficient resources available from the local government or elsewhere, much of the population endure living conditions fit for criminals rather than hardworking citizens trying to better their lives. Consequently, Liege remains one of Europe’s most unsafe places – despite its beautiful architecture and rich culture.

8. Montpellier, France

Located on the Mediterranean Sea in southern France, Montpellier has a long history of crime and violence. The city is known for its high rates of theft, assault, and drug trafficking.

Montpellier, a vibrant university city in southern France, has been ranked as the 8th most dangerous city in Europe due to high levels of drug-related crime and occasional episodes of urban violence, but its charming architecture, Mediterranean climate, and cultural offerings still draw visitors.

In recent years, the problem has only become worse. Drug-related crimes have significantly increased in the past decade and violent assaults are becoming more common. There have been several reports of mobsters operating within the city limits as well.

The local government has taken steps to combat this issue by increasing police presence and implementing new security measures. Despite these efforts, however, crime remains an ongoing threat to residents and visitors alike. It’s important to remain vigilant when traveling to or around Montpellier so that you can stay safe during your visit.

7. Naples, Italy

It has a long history of organized crime and violence, with many gangs operating in the city. The situation in Naples can be quite volatile; it is not uncommon for gun fights to break out between rival groups or even within neighborhoods. These episodes are often linked to turf wars over drug trafficking or other criminal activities.

Known for its stunning architecture, rich history, and delicious cuisine, Naples has also gained a reputation as the 7th most dangerous city in Europe due to high levels of petty crime, gang activity, and occasional episodes of mafia violence.

The high levels of poverty and unemployment that plague much of the region also play a role in making Naples so dangerous. This leads to desperate acts committed by people who have no other option but to resort to crime as their means of survival. In addition, gang members are known to recruit vulnerable young people into their ranks, which only increases the problem.

Authorities struggle to combat organized crime and restore safety to the streets, yet progress remains slow due to limited resources and corruption at various levels of government. As such, citizens remain largely unprotected from those involved in illicit activities like drugs and extortion schemes. Although police presence may help deter some criminals from taking action against innocent civilians, this alone will not be enough to make significant improvements in reducing violent crime rates throughout the city.

6. Birmingham, United Kingdom

The crime rate has skyrocketed over the past few years in Birmingham, UK, leaving little safety for its inhabitants. The number of acts of robbery has risen astronomically, with brazen criminals often using weapons such as knives or guns while committing their atrocious deeds. Reports suggest that violent assaults are extremely common in certain parts of the city, making these areas particularly hazardous to walk through. Furthermore, drug trafficking plays an increasingly large role in criminal activity here – many gangs use dealers to move contraband around the city for their gain.

Birmingham, England’s second-largest city, has been ranked as the 6th most dangerous city in Europe due to high levels of violent crime, gang activity, and social deprivation, but its rich cultural heritage and modern attractions continue to make it a popular destination.

Given the alarming rates of violence and other forms of criminality, it would be wise to avoid Birmingham unless necessary. The area should not be taken lightly – visitors should exercise extreme caution when navigating through this treacherous maze of danger and despair.

5. Nantes, France

Moving on from Birmingham, we come to Nantes in France. This city of around 300,000 people is the sixth-largest in the country and has a rich history stretching back centuries. However, it isn’t without its dangers. The crime rate is higher than average for French cities, with robberies being particularly common in certain areas. Additionally, there have been some reports of violence against tourists and locals alike.

While having a reputation for being one of the most creative and dynamic towns in France, Nantes has been listed as the fifth most dangerous city in Europe due to high rates of drug-related crime and sporadic incidents of urban violence.

Nantes’ public transport system can be unreliable at times which means that many people opt to take taxis instead. Unfortunately, this can make them vulnerable to criminals who target taxi users as they are often carrying valuable items or cash. To stay safe while traveling through Nantes by car or public transport, ensure you are aware of your surroundings and remain vigilant at all times. It’s also important to avoid walking alone late at night and stick to well-lit streets if possible.

Overall, Nantes remains relatively safe compared to other major cities in Europe but you should always exercise caution when traveling here just like any other unfamiliar place. Taking basic safety precautions such as keeping valuables out of sight will go a long way towards ensuring a trouble-free trip!

4. Coventry, United Kingdom

Coventry, UK is the fourth most dangerous city in Europe. It has an alarming rate of violent crime, with a large percentage occurring in public areas and around the city center. Additionally, there are high levels of gang-related activity, with numerous organized gangs present in Coventry. As such, the risk to citizens’ safety is considerable.

Coventry, a city in central England, has been ranked as the 4th most dangerous city in Europe due to high levels of violent crime and gang activity, but its rich history, modern architecture, and cultural offerings continue to attract visitors and residents alike.

The police force in Coventry has done its best to combat these issues by increasing patrols and introducing CCTV cameras throughout the city. However, despite this increased presence on the streets, residents still feel unsafe due to the prevalence of criminal activity in certain parts of town. Moreover, many businesses have been forced to close or move out due to fear for their safety and that of their customers.

Therefore it can be argued that Coventry remains one of Europe’s most dangerous urban environments today; its residents live under threat from criminals who show no regard for law enforcement or people’s personal safety.

3. Catania, Italy

Catania in Italy is the third most dangerous city in Europe. The city has a long history of crime and violence that continues to plague its citizens today. With high rates of theft and robbery, it’s no wonder why Catania consistently ranks among some of the most dangerous cities on the continent.

The Sicilian mafia plays an undeniable role in contributing to this atmosphere of fear and anxiety in Catania. Mafia-related crimes such as extortion, drug trafficking and money laundering have been rampant for decades now. Even though law enforcement authorities are making attempts to crack down on these activities, they still remain a major problem throughout much of Sicily.

That being said, there are plenty of positive aspects about life in Catania too – from its stunningly beautiful architecture to its vibrant culture and nightlife scene. But unfortunately, it’s not enough to outweigh all the negative elements associated with living here. For those who wish to travel Catania, extra caution should be taken when out at night or alone in public areas.

2. Marseille, France

Marseille, France, is ranked second in the top 10 most dangerous cities in Europe. However, while it is true that Marseille experiences a high crime rate, the situation can be largely attributed to poverty and social exclusion among its residents.

Marseille, a port city in southern France, has struggled with organized crime, gang violence, and drug trafficking, making it one of the most dangerous cities in Europe. Despite this, its rich history and cultural heritage continue to attract visitors from around the world.

The city is home to some of the poorest areas in all of Europe, such as La Castellane and Les Caillols. These neighborhoods are characterized by overcrowding and inadequate housing conditions, with many families lacking access to basic necessities like running water or waste disposal systems. This lack of resources has caused drug use and gang activity to thrive within these impoverished communities, leading to increased violence throughout Marseille.

Despite this difficult reality, there have been efforts made to improve life in Marseille through initiatives such as urban renewal projects for marginalized populations. In addition, local authorities have created programs aimed at combating organized crime and providing employment opportunities for young people living in disadvantaged parts of the city. While progress has yet to be seen on a large scale, these steps should continue in order to reduce crime rates in the long run.

1. Bradford, United Kingdom

Turning our attention away from Marseille, we come to Europe’s most dangerous city: Bradford. Located in West Yorkshire, this ancient settlement is home to a population of more than 300,000 people. It has been plagued by crime and violence for decades due to its large immigrant population and high unemployment rate.

Bradford, ranked as the most dangerous city in Europe, struggles with high rates of violent crime, social deprivation, and drug-related issues. Despite these challenges, the city’s multicultural community and industrial heritage continue to shape its character.

In recent years, Bradford has seen an increase in gang-related crime and drug trafficking. This is largely attributed to the fact that many young people are drawn into criminal networks as a way out of poverty or lack of economic opportunity. The local police force has done what it can to tackle these issues but it remains one of the UK’s most deprived cities with nearly 45% living below the poverty line.

Despite these problems, there are still signs of hope; over the last few years, several initiatives have sprung up designed to help those who are struggling and provide them with support services such as education programs, job training, and mentoring opportunities. These efforts demonstrate that while Bradford may be one of Europe’s most dangerous cities it also offers potential for change and growth if given the right resources and support.

Conclusion

It’s safe to say that Europe is home to some of the most dangerous cities in the world. From Liege, Belgium, and Catania, Italy, to Birmingham and Bradford in the UK – there are numerous places where one should take extra caution when visiting.

Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to stay away from these cities completely! Just be sure to use your common sense if you’re traveling around; with a bit of research and preparation beforehand, you can make sure your visit goes off without a hitch – or even more impressively, an adventure so exciting it’ll feel like a rocket taking off into outer space!

Ever wondered why Europeans behave so differently? Have you ever been baffled by the customs and traditions of those across the pond? As an American, I know how confusing it can be to witness these strange phenomena in Europe. And that’s what this article is all about: 10 peculiarities that are unique to European culture – from their use of public transportation to their take on coffee. Whether it’s your first time visiting or simply curious as to how they do things over there, this piece will give you a fascinating insight into some of the more bizarre aspects of life in Europe. So join me as I explore these ten weird and wonderful happenings!

More Open Sexuality

I think one of the biggest things that stands out to me as strange from an American perspective when it comes to Europe is their more open attitude towards sexuality. It’s not uncommon in many European countries for people to be more accepting of varying types and expressions of sexuality, including homosexuality. In some places, there are even laws against discrimination based on sexual orientation! This level of acceptance and support isn’t something you typically find in the U.S., which can make it a bit shocking at first glance.

I didn’t realize what a prudish country I lived in until I visited Europe. I was 15 years old and my parents were freaked out that they were showing boobs everywhere on Dutch TV. In Belgium, there was an exhibition called ‘The Art of the Orgasm’ and in Switzerland, a jewelry brochure had model ladies kissing. Most hotels have a soft porn channel. In the States, this is unthinkable, if only we were so free with our sexuality.

It’s pretty fascinating how different societies have such wildly different ways of looking at sex and sexuality – something I hadn’t thought about before visiting Europe. For instance, it could still feel slightly taboo or frowned upon in America to discuss certain aspects of sex openly, where people aren’t afraid to talk about these kinds of topics without fear or judgment. There seems to be much less shame associated with sexuality in general, which I find refreshing and eye-opening.

The openness that exists around this subject matter has allowed Europeans to become very progressive when it comes to issues like same-sex marriage rights, contraception access, and abortion laws. This kind of forward-thinking is inspiring – although there’s still progress left to be made for all members of society to be equally heard and respected no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation. With fewer stigmas attached to being who they truly are, hopefully, more people will feel empowered by their own identities…moving us closer toward true equality among all genders and orientations worldwide.

Fewer Homeless People

In comparison to the United States, there are far fewer homeless people present in European cities. This can be particularly jarring for a visitor coming from America where homelessness is much more visible and common.

One thing that immediately struck me when visiting various countries throughout Europe was how few beggars were lining city streets and sidewalks. No doubt this contributes to a different atmosphere; one of relative prosperity compared to what many Americans are used to seeing at home. It’s easy to forget just how lucky we have it here until you visit places where something as basic as finding shelter isn’t such an issue.

I’ve been to several big European cities, and not just in the city centre, and it was shocking to see how few homeless people there are on the streets. In the video, you can see footage from the streets of Philadelphia, also known as the Mecca of the homeless, where unfortunately there are indeed a lot of drug addicts and homeless people without a purpose in life…

The reality is that not all countries in the world are blessed with resources or access to good housing so easily taken for granted elsewhere. The fact that Europeans enjoy greater security against homelessness than those living in other parts of the world should make us pause and reflect on our privilege.

Taking Off Your Shoes

I found something really strange when I first came to Europe from America. Everywhere we went, people were taking their shoes off! It was like they had some sort of sixth sense that told them it was time to slip into something more comfortable – in this case, bare feet! At first, I thought it might just be a cultural thing, but after doing some research I discovered the custom has been around for centuries and is practiced all over Europe.

At home we wear shoes in the house, I mean when we go home we don’t take our shoes off, but in Europe, you have to take your shoes off everywhere. Strange, but I thought that was only in Japan.

What’s odd about this tradition is how many places require you to do it. When visiting someone’s home or entering certain religious buildings, you’ll almost always be asked to remove your shoes before going inside. And if you don’t take them off, chances are you won’t get very far! The idea behind the practice seems to be rooted in hygiene and respect; by removing our shoes at the door we keep dirt out of the house and show courtesy towards our hosts.

It still takes me aback now and again when somebody asks me to take my shoes off before coming in. But as I’ve become more familiar with European customs, I’m starting to understand why so many people choose not to wear their shoes indoors here. There’s even a certain comfort associated with being able to kick back and relax without any footwear on! As weird as it may seem at first glance, taking off one’s shoes can be quite liberating – both literally and figuratively speaking!

Children Freer To Move Around

It is a strange phenomenon for many Americans in Europe to witness—children are often freer to move around unsupervised. It’s difficult not to be taken aback by this scene after living in an environment where constant supervision was the norm for most kids.

I was traveling by bus in Slovakia and I just watched as the children got out of the vehicle at the first stop and started running around and playing with each other, while the parents shopped in the shop. It was mind-blowing that the country was so safe, it was unthinkable at home.

To make matters even more peculiar, it wasn’t just young children that could be seen walking around without adults nearby; teens were also spotted out on their own, something which would surely cause some serious alarm bells back home! The lack of fear or concerns parents had about their child’s safety seemed almost incomprehensible when compared with American standards.

This level of independence amongst children marks a stark contrast from what is expected in the US – making it one of the strangest phenomena Europeans can experience while traveling across the continent. As we look closer at how life differs between countries, we find ourselves face-to-face with another interesting difference: more homogeneous cultures.

More Homogeneous

As an American, I am struck by the homogeneity of culture in Europe. Everywhere you go there is a shared sense of language, food, and religion that binds its citizens together. This stark contrast to the melting pot of cultures found in my home country has been fascinating for me to witness firsthand.

I was surprised to see how ethnically homogeneous Central and Eastern Europe is. I visited the region for three weeks and saw only a few Asian faces and one black person who was also a tourist. America is much more colorful.

In some ways this can be seen as a strength; it helps create a strong national identity and creates pride amongst citizens over their shared history and heritage. However, it can also lead to stagnation and lack of creativity due to too much similarity across different areas. It may also create more xenophobia between countries since those who don’t fit the criteria set by one country’s population are sometimes looked down upon or even discriminated against.

It was strange for me at first because I’m used to seeing so many different types of people living side-by-side with each other in America–all contributing something unique and valuable to our society. Nevertheless, despite these differences, Europeans have managed to find common ground on which they all stand united, creating a powerful bond between them that is both admirable and awe-inspiring.

Higher Taxes

One of the most peculiar phenomena in Europe that are strange to an American perspective is their higher taxes. From our point of view, taxation can be seen as a burden that limits our freedom and removes money from us without any tangible benefits in return. That said, Europeans don’t seem to have this same objection. They accept high tax rates with relative ease and generally don’t feel overly burdened by them.

At first, I was surprised at how high taxes are here in European countries, which was hard to digest. But now I’m happy to pay more because I see where the money goes: nice parks, clean streets, almost every part of the city is safe, it’s just a nicer place to live.

What’s more, they enjoy some of the services provided by these taxes such as free healthcare for all citizens or subsidized education for their children. This kind of service isn’t something we’re used to seeing in the United States and it makes us wonder if there could be other benefits to paying higher taxes than just better public services.

The answer may lie in European culture which tends to emphasize mutualism over individualism. While Americans tend to value personal autonomy above everything else, Europeans prefer collective action when possible and this extends into their approach toward taxation too. So while higher taxes might not sound appealing at first glance, perhaps it’s worth considering how many benefits everyone would get out of it if we adopted similar attitudes here in America.

Cheaper Medicines, Healthcare

Well, wouldn’t you know it? After enduring the financial burden of higher taxes in Europe, Americans are often surprised to learn that healthcare and medicines come at a much lower cost. In fact, for many Europeans, access to basic medical care is nearly free! It’s almost as if we expect all parts of life to be expensive.

No one talks about how much cheaper medicines are in Europe, especially if you buy them on prescription. Of course, I should also mention that at home, the only thing that separates most people from financial ruin is an accident or illness. Here, I do not have to live in fear that if I break my leg, all my savings will be gone.

When an American hears about this level of healthcare affordability coming from across the pond, they may feel both relieved and confused. How can such prices exist when we pay so much more back home? The answer lies within the design of European health systems which use government subsidies to make sure that everyone has access to quality medicine without breaking the bank. This means better care for those who need it most while allowing individuals with fewer resources to remain healthy too.

But wait –there’s more! Many countries have gone even further by introducing cheaper generic versions of popular drugs as well as discounts on over-the-counter medications like aspirin or ibuprofen. As a result, there’s no reason why anyone should suffer due to lack of funds; even if their wallet isn’t full, their cabinet can still be stocked with essential medicines. With these advances in low-cost healthcare providing help where needed, it seems worth taking another look at our approach here in America…

Dress

Growing up in America, I was used to the vast cultural diversity that existed within the country. With each state feeling like its own separate entity, it was hard to imagine how someone could easily identify a “typical” American. However, upon traveling to Europe, I quickly realized that American tourists were often immediately recognizable.

America is a huge country, each state is so different it’s like a separate country, so I never thought such a diverse population could be easily identifiable. In Europe, however, you can spot American tourists a mile away in any country. The loud talking, the dress, everything is so telling.

The distinct features that made Americans stand out varied from their accent to their mannerisms, but it was something more intangible that was often identified by the locals. It could be the way they dressed, with bright colors and bold patterns that stood out amidst the more muted tones of European fashion. Alternatively, it could be their volume and enthusiasm, a level of exuberance that seemed out of place in the more reserved European culture.

At first, I felt as though I was being judged or stereotyped based on my nationality, but as I spent more time in Europe, I began to appreciate the ways in which these cultural differences were celebrated. The ways in which we express ourselves, through our dress, speech, and demeanor, are all part of our unique cultural identities. It’s these differences that make travel such a rich and rewarding experience, allowing us to learn from and appreciate the diverse cultures and perspectives that exist around the world.

Openness

I have noticed that, in general, European people tend to be less sensitive than Americans. By sensitivity, I mean the tendency to get easily offended or upset when someone expresses a different point of view or perspective. In my experience, Europeans are more likely to engage in civil and constructive discussions, even when they disagree with someone.

This cultural difference is particularly evident in situations where two individuals hold divergent opinions on a topic. In the United States, it is not uncommon for such discussions to quickly escalate into heated arguments, with both parties becoming defensive and confrontational. On the other hand, Europeans tend to approach such discussions with a more open-minded attitude, seeking to understand the other person’s perspective before presenting their own.

European people are not as sensitive as Americans. What do I mean? If you are talking about something and two people have a different point of view, they will discuss it in a civilized way and not get bloody offended just because the other person doesn’t think the same way. In my house, everyone is careful not to say something that might upset the person they are talking to.

I’ve found a similar pattern in my own home. Everyone is careful not to say anything that might upset or offend the other person. This is not to say that we don’t have disagreements or differing opinions – quite the contrary, in fact. However, we have learned to express ourselves in a respectful and considerate manner, taking care not to make personal attacks or insults.

I believe that this cultural difference can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the historical and social context of European societies has shaped their citizens to be more resilient and adaptable in the face of adversity. European countries have experienced countless wars, conflicts, and political upheavals over the centuries, which have instilled a sense of stoicism and fortitude in their populations. Secondly, the cultural emphasis on individual responsibility and accountability has led to a greater capacity to tolerate opposing views without taking them personally.

Lack Of Immediacy In Conversation

Growing up in America, it was always natural for me to strike up a conversation with a stranger, especially in a casual setting like a coffee shop or supermarket. Whether it was discussing the weather, commenting on the length of the line, or making small talk about a shared experience like the crowded shop, it felt like a perfectly normal thing to do. In fact, it was almost expected.

This is how I first felt when I was in Europe and I spoke to a person. At home, it’s natural for strangers to get chatting and discuss the weather, or that there’s a crowd in the shop, a colleague has called in sick and that’s why you’re late, etc. I found it hard to get used to the fact that wherever I lived in Europe, this kind of informality was not present in the cities. The first time I told a girl in line that my shoe hurt, she looked at me like I was a UFO, even though anyone else in America would have responded sympathetically.

When I moved to Europe, however, I quickly realized that this kind of informality was not present in the same way. It was a cultural shock for me to realize that people did not engage in these kinds of casual conversations as much, especially in cities. I remember the first time I told a girl in line that my feet hurt because of my shoes, expecting her to respond with sympathy or perhaps a lighthearted comment. Instead, she looked at me like I was an alien from another planet.

At first, I felt disappointed and even a bit isolated. It was hard to adjust to a social culture where strangers didn’t interact in the same way as they did in America. But as I began to immerse myself in European culture, I started to appreciate the value of this more reserved social approach. I began to understand that Europeans tend to value privacy and personal space more highly than Americans do, and that this kind of formality was simply a reflection of that cultural difference.

Let’s dive into the past and present of this incredible place!

History Of The Border Agreement

The unique border agreement between Spain and France regarding Pheasant Island is a fascinating example of European diplomacy. Every six months, the island swaps countries – with no pause in sovereignty or authority over the land.

The story begins in 1659 when King Louis XIV of France and Philip IV of Spain signed the Treaty of Pyrenees ending the Franco-Spanish War.

As part of the treaty they agreed to share control of Pheasant Island located off the coast near Hondarribia on Spain’s Basque Coast. This arrangement has remained intact ever since, with both countries enjoying equal rights over the tiny strip of land for three decades each year.

Louis XIV of France and King Philip IV of Spain meet on the Pheasants Island to sign the Treaty of Pyrenees (painting by Jacques Laumosnier)

In 1932 an additional protocol was added to this agreement stipulating that the Spanish flag fly over Pheasant Island during odd numbered years (January 1st through June 30th), while its French counterpart adorns it from July 1st until December 31st every even numbered year. Although there have been some attempts by either country to renegotiate these terms, none were successful as maintaining status quo remains highly desirable for both sides. Furthermore, although joint administrative responsibility can be complicated at times, it ultimately ensures peaceful relations between two historically hostile neighbors.

While legally speaking both nations are allowed unrestricted access to Pheasant Island throughout their respective periods, practically speaking only one nation exercises full sovereign power at any given time – allowing them exclusive right to grant permits and other legal documents necessary for visiting tourists or conducting business on site. However despite such restrictions local people living nearby don’t really feel “switched” whenever a new government takes charge as everyday life usually continues unchanged under both flagships.

This remarkable situation allows those who live close enough to visit Pheasant Island twice a year; once to pay homage to Spanish culture and traditions, another time for similar french experiences – all without leaving home! Thus it’s no wonder why locals proudly refer to themselves as citizens of ‘Europa’. With its rich history and tales of perseverance against odds, Pheasant Island stands out as a symbol of peace and harmony among former enemies in Europe today.

Impact On The Local Population

The population on Pheasant Island is very small and almost exclusively consists of those working for the governments that own the island. This includes staff from both countries who are employed to maintain the island, manage its resources or serve as guards and customs officials. The local people have grown accustomed to living in a place where two nations share sovereignty every six months, though it’s not always seamless. There may be difficulties adjusting to the different political systems, cultures and languages when transition occurs twice a year.

In addition, while most locals work for one of the governments involved in switching control over the island, some struggle due to changes in trade regulations or taxation policies imposed by either side. Business owners can also find themselves caught up in bureaucratic issues between Spain and France which make running their operations more difficult than usual. For these reasons, many of them choose not to stay on the island for long periods of time during times of transition.

Moreover, there has been controversy regarding how much power each nation should have on Pheasant Island once it switches hands. In recent years, Spain has argued that they should receive preferential treatment since they laid claim to the island first; however, this issue remains unresolved. As such, tensions sometimes rise between residents when disagreements arise about what rights each party should enjoy while alternating terms on Pheasant Island.

All in all, life on Pheasant Island is continually affected by its unique arrangement – both positively and negatively – whenever new leadership takes charge every six months. With its interesting history comes an array of challenges that must be navigated together by both sides if peaceful coexistence is to remain possible here at all times…

Unique Characteristics Of Pheasant Island

Pheasant Island is truly a unique piece of land. Located in the Bidasoa River and off the coast of Spain and France, it’s strategically situated between two countries which it changes allegiance to every six months! It also has an interesting layout – with its main building being constructed on a small island that can only be accessed via a drawbridge. Its exquisite gardens are full of picturesque trees and flowers, adding even more beauty to this delightful spot.

The island’s architecture is remarkable too. Constructed over 400 years ago by Louis XIV, the Château de Pheasants is made up of intricate stone walls which encircle the entire area – perfect for capturing its fascinating history as well as providing modern-day protection against intruders.

Dutch photographer Rick Kloekke was greeted by a wonderful sight when he visited his family in San Marino, one of the smallest countries in the world. After a few rainy days, the photographer was able to admire San Marino floating in a sea of fog, which he captured and compiled a spectacular time-lapse video of his shots of Monte Titano and its surroundings.

The small country has a population of nearly 32,000, with the two most populous cities being San Marino (the capital) and Serravalle, which has a population larger than the capital. San Marino is the third smallest state in Europe, smaller only than Monaco and the Vatican. It was the smallest republic in the world from 301 until Nauru became independent in 1968. San Marino is a parliamentary republic with one of the oldest republican constitutions in the world, dating back to 1244.

As you wander through the narrow streets of San Marino, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The cobblestone roads, the ancient castles, the stunning views – it’s all so surreal. And let’s not forget the food! San Marino has some seriously delicious cuisine, from the hearty pasta dishes to the mouthwatering gelato.

San Marino is an enclave of Italy, on the border between the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche. Its topography is dominated by the Apennines, the highest point being Monte Titano at 749 metres. At the top of Monte Titano you can see an 11th century and a 13th century fortress.

Tourism is very important, with more than 3 million tourists visiting San Marino every year. The main attractions of the country, apart from its natural beauty, are to be found in San Marino, with its medieval old town surrounded by a medieval wall and hundreds of years old buildings and churches.

But we know you’re interested in the video, so without further ado, here’s the amazing film

Exploring Meteora – A Guide To Visiting The Rock Monasteries

Perched atop the majestic rocks of Thessaly, Meteora is an awe-inspiring sight. It’s a collection of monasteries that have stood since the 14th century, making it one of Greece’s most iconic landmarks. For centuries, pilgrims and adventurers alike have flocked to this unique destination for its captivating history and stunning views. So if you’re looking for a memorable experience in Greece – visiting Meteora should definitely be on your list!

Getting there can be quite an adventure – with winding roads through steep hillsides leading up to the base of the cliffs. But once you reach the top, you’ll understand why this place has been so sought after throughout history. From here, you can choose from several paths leading to different monasteries where monks still reside today. You’ll also find plenty of opportunities for hiking or picnicking along the way, giving you ample time to take in all that nature has to offer.

Great Meteoron Monastery / Only France via AFP/AIR PANO / ONLYWORLD.NET/Air Pano

The beauty of Meteora doesn’t end at its picturesque landscape though; its architecture is truly something special too! Each monastery boasts intricate stonework, spectacular frescoes and other works of art which will transport you back in time. If possible, try and visit during religious holidays when services are held as this will give you a true insight into what life was like centuries ago.

Meteora may not be one of Greece’s most well-known attractions but it’s certainly worth discovering – especially if travelling off-the-beaten path is more your thing! Its dramatic scenery combined with rich culture make it a must-visit location for anyone who wants to explore beyond the tourist hotspots. Plus it offers some much needed peace and quiet away from city life; allowing visitors to reconnect with themselves and their surroundings in a unique way.

History Of The Meteora Region

The Meteora region of Greece is home to an incredible history and a unique geological formation. This area has been inhabited since ancient times, but it wasn’t until the 14th century that its rock monasteries – some of which are still standing today – became part of the landscape. Let’s take a closer look at the rich background behind this stunning destination.

The earliest known inhabitants in the Meteora region were Neolithic people who likely settled there due to its strategic location atop high rocks. The first mention of these tribes dates back to around 1250 BCE, when Homer wrote about them in his epics. Throughout much of antiquity, however, very few people lived in or visited the area. That began to change with the arrival of Orthodox monks in the late 13th century CE.

The monastery of Aigios Nikolaos Anapafsas is the first active building on the road to Meteora and was built in the 14th century. There are several stories about the origin of its name. According to one, Anapafsas refers to the patron who gave money to build the monastery, while another refers to the location of the monastery.

The monastery of Agios Nikolaos is the first of the Meteora monasteries where pilgrims could rest after reaching the rock forest. The Greek word for rest is anapafsis, so the name of the monastery literally translates as ‘St Nicholas, with whom you can rest’.

The name ‘Anapafsas’ comes from Greek words meaning ‘to be carried away’ and this sense of being transported to another world pervades throughout the building. Inside are intricately decorated chapels, soaring arches and frescoes depicting biblical scenes; all adding to the serene atmosphere that envelops you upon arrival. For those looking for more than just sightseeing opportunities, the monastery also provides some wonderful opportunities for reflection too – such as meditation classes or yoga retreats held at various times throughout the year.

At first glance, St Nikolaos Anapafsas may seem like any other monastery but delve deeper into its past and you will uncover something truly unique about this place. Its impressive library houses one-of-a-kind manuscripts dating back to 1420 AD which offer insights into Byzantine life during that era in addition to rare books on theology and philosophy. It’s almost impossible not to be moved by these documents!

Nestled in central Greece and sitting atop 600 meter tall natural limestone pillars, you’ll find a wondrous place called Meteora. The name Meteoro, when roughly translated from Greek, means “midair” and has the aura of a fairy tale mixed with a side of fantasy novel. On the right day, surrounded by clouds that fill the valley below, Meteora seems to literally be suspended in the sky.

Join us as we explore the majestic Greek region whose monasteries seem to float in the sky.

The History of Meteora

Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is known for its picturesque monasteries perched atop its vertical rock pillars. In the 9th century, hermit monks seeking solitude originally ascended these soaring cliffs. It is believed that they first climbed the cliffs with their bare hands, grabbing trees and rocks until they eventually carved out homes in the cliffside and nestled in small caves and crevices. They lived lives of seclusion and isolation, only occasionally exiting their caves to worship and pray.

Meteora. In total, there are twenty-four Byzantine monasteries, of which only five are still used by monks.

To appreciate how these remarkable monasteries were eventually built, a quick history lesson is in order. By the end of the 14th century, the Byzantine Empire’s 800-year reign was drawing to an end, with Turkish invaders increasingly besieging monastic communities in Greece. Hermit monks seeking safety from the then-ruling Ottoman Empire hid in plain sight and settled atop the impassable limestone cliffs of Meteora.

Construction of the Monasteries

Building monasteries in the middle of the sky is a herculean task and without access to present day technology like helicopters and airplanes, it is not known exactly how the ancient monks actually constructed the monasteries. It is believed that most of the monasteries were constructed over the course of 20 or more years, with each brick, mortar, and other materials being hauled atop the cliffs via nets, hooks, buckets, and ropes. More than 20 monasteries of various sizes were miraculously built by the monks on top of the cliffs, risking their lives in the process. While it is not known how many monks died during construction, it was surely a treacherous and deadly endeavor.

Despite the lack of steps and limited access to the outside world, the monastic communities of Meteora thrived.

Using scaffolds for climbing and getting supplies, 40 meter long extendable wooden ladders, and by using nets tied to a hook and hoisted up and down by a rope or retractable ladders, the monks would thrive in safety on the cliff tops.

Resurgence and Decline

Following a period of decline in the 15th century, the settlements of Meteora saw a brief resurgence in the 16th century when Meteora became a refuge center for Greeks fleeing the Ottoman Empire’s brutal dominion. Since it was one of only a few sites where Hellenic culture was preserved, it attracted not only the faithful but also poets, philosophers, and philosophical thinkers. Some argue that Hellenic traditions and culture would have completely vanished if it weren’t for the Meteora monasteries.

Hagiography of the Monastery was completed by Theophanis the Cretan. © visitmeteora.travel

While the monasteries of Meteora were quite safe, they were not immune to attacks from invading thieves and conquerors. As a result, over the centuries, many of Meteora’s monasteries were either abandoned or destructed. During World War II, the site was severely destroyed and numerous artifacts were stolen.

Present-Day Monasteries

Although at least 30 monasteries were built over the course of history at Meteora, only six monasteries remain: the Great Meteoron (also known as All Saints), St. Nicholas Anapausas, Holy Trinity, St. Stephen, Rousanou, and Varlaam. While some of the monasteries still serve religious functions, most are only sparsely populated by monks and nuns.

The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, built by Saint Athanasios in the 14th century, is the highest, largest, and oldest of the six. The ancient bread oven and soup part can still be found in the smoke-filled kitchen, and former monastery monks are buried in the sacristy with their skulls and bones neatly piled on shelves.

Holy Monastery of Varlaam is the second largest, and in the 16th century, two wealthy monks took over the site and it took more than 20 years to carry all of the building materials to the top. The original rope basket used to lift the supplies can still be seen.

Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas monastery has a single-naved church with a small dome decorated by the Cretan painter Theophanes the Monk in the 16th century. Monastery of the Holy Trinity is one of the least visited since it is the most difficult to reach, requiring a steep climb of 140 steps.

Monastery of the Holy Trinity / credit: Peso

The last of the monasteries, the Holy Monastery of St. Stephen, which dates back to the 1400s, is now a convent with stunning views of the Pineios River and is the only monastery where visitors can visit without using stairs.

Accessing the Monasteries

Since the construction of paved roads through the Meteora area in the 1960s, it has been visited annually by thousands of tourists. The monasteries are easily accessible by bridges and stairs cut into the rocks. Before the 1920s, ascending the rock columns involved a perilous enterprise of climbing ladders or being hauled up by ropes and nets.

Conservation Efforts

Conservation efforts have been ongoing since 1972 to counter overall decay and the destruction incurred during World War II when the area was bombed by the German military. Ongoing threats to the structures include vibrations caused by low-flying aircraft and damage relating to the area’s frequent tremors and earthquakes.

Visiting Meteora

With an entrance fee of 3 € per person per monastery, a visit to Meteora is both inexpensive and potentially life-changing. Although the climb up to most of these monasteries is strenuous, but when you get up there you’ll say it was worth it. The view from the top is breathtaking, and you will feel like you are on top of the world, surrounded by nature and a serene atmosphere. Visitors can explore the monasteries and learn about the rich history and cultural significance of the site. They can also admire the stunning Byzantine art and artifacts that are housed in each monastery.

Whether you are a history buff, a religious pilgrim, or simply someone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Meteora has something for everyone.

Malta is the smallest member of European Union. The island has a Mediterranean feeling, but something different than the classic resorts on the coasts of Mediterranean Sea. There are no endless sandy beaches, crowded coasts and hotellines, but historical treasures and culture of thousand of years are waiting for visitors. Crystal clear sea, the sunshine and the local gastronomy also aren’t negligible.

Brief history

In Malta virtually all of the great powers in history passed through. Around 5000 BC there were inhabitants on the island, 1000 years later Sicilian tribes settled down, whose caves and structures today are the part of the UNESCO World Heritages. Phoenicians taught the basics of Maltese language and of course the science of navigation to the inhabitants. In 60 AC St. Paul who later converted Christianity on the island, wrecked at Malta’s coasts. Later Arabs, Normans and Aragonese conquerors came to the island.

Malta’s best-known residents were the Hospitallers, the Knights of the Order of St. John. They created the current image of the island during the 16th century. Knights built the present capital, Valletta.

Napoleon also was here, but it is true that as for the legends he spent here only 3 days. The nearly 2 years of French domination was broken by the locals and British together. The country became completely free in 1964.

Attractions in Malta

One of its main attractions is the capital, Valletta. The town lies on a peninsula, surrounded by a stronghold and is the part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The town was founded by Knights Hospitaller. Wandering in the old town we find ourselves in the age of knights, in the charming cobbled streets and squares we can find many souvenir shops, cafés and restaurants. It’s worth to walk along Triqir-Reppublika, flenked by the major attractions of the town: the city gate, St. James and St. Elmo Fort and St. John’s Bastion.

The Grand Harbor of Malta
The St. Elmo Fort

St. John Cathedral is a must see, the largest cathedral in Malta, the religious center of the island, with its fancy (almost kitschy) baroque decor and Caravaggio’s paintings. The Auberge de Castille Palace today is the prime minister’s residence, can’t be visited but it’s beautiful from outside.

On the southern part of Malta lies Rabat, which also worths a visit. Here is the St. Paul Cave where as for the legend Apostle Paul first preached Christianity. If we are here, visit the city walls and St. Paul Cathedral.

St. Paul Cathedral

The town of Silema is on the northern part of Malta, popular resort on the island. There are plenty of hotels here, the town attracts tourists with its crystal clear water.

St. Julian is famous for its nightlife, many clubs can be found here, the town is the most popular destinations for youngs. Here is the biggest shopping center of Malta, the Bay Street Shopping Center.

Gozo and Comino islands

Malta consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. Goso is an ideal place for relax. Due to its calm, familiar athmosphere is a great place to hide from the world. The most attractions are in the capital of the island, in Victoria. Worths to see the Citadel, the cathedral and the town market. Gozo is popular among the divers.
Leisure time

Malta doesn’t belong to the common seaside resorts, but it’s a great place for relax and leisure. The island is not the best place for who prefers sandy shores, because it has mainly rocky coasts. But it has benefits, like crystal clear water and intimate coves. Malta is a diving paradise, you just need a diving goggles and a snorkel and you can dive into marine mysteries. Professionals and braves can try boat diving trips. Malta has no hotellines, the hotels and apartmants are enclosed by the houses of the villages, allowing tourists to easily gain insights into the daily life of locals, who are extremely hospitables.

Who loves seafood, won’t be disappointed in Malta. People here eat a lots of fresh fish, cooked in various ways. It’s typical to prepare fish and meats with paradise, paprika and onion. They love to use fresh herbs, olive and caper. Rabbit meat is a national food, cooked usually in red wine. Among fruits in summer the most common is the fresh, luscious figs. Worths to taste the local Farson’s beer. The sweet Kinnie is a specialty, a non-alcoholic soft drink, mix of orange juice and water with various spices.

When someone arrives home from Rome and says he didn’t visit Colosseum or has no idea if he saw the Trevi fountain among the others, people will think he is weird. Rome is full of must see attractions, include Vatican, what to miss would be a sin if we are in the capital of Italy. Whe hearing its name most people immediately think about the Chatolic religion, that this is the seat of the Pope, but the real highlight of Vatican City is the interweave of religion and art in a supremely high standard. Many of Rome’s attractions can be found in this tiny state and if someone is susceptible to the arts, only a few hours won’t be enough for him to discover every beauty of Vatican City.

The more than 2000-year-old Vatican officially formed as an indapendent state within Italy in 1929 when Pope XI. Pius entered into a contract with Italian government. It was built on Vatican hill, where in 64 AC a lot of Christians were massacred by Nero’s command. According to the Catholic religion one of the martyrs was Apostle Peter, the later St. Peter, the first pope. The area of Vatican was many times larger in the middle of the 19th century than now (0,44 km2), today the number of its inhabitants is 800 – most of them are pope’s stuff and other majority church officials – they easily would fit in a larger New York apartment. Vatican City is enjoying full autonomy, has its own money, stamp, telephone- and television companies and even has its own army. Its protection is provided by the famous Swiss Guard.

Each year more than 4 million people visit the most sacred place of Catholicism. Among them there are at least as many pilgrims as tourists, who are primarily attracted by Vatican’s unique art collections. One of the major attractions not only of Citta del Vaticano but also of Rome is St. Peter’s Basilica, the most important among every Catholic church in the world which – as for the religion – was built up by Emperor Constantine above Apostle Peter’s tomb. The exact date when the construction started is unknown. Presumably the foundating stones were laid between 319-322. The building is so monumental that it’s almost impossible do discover all the details, altough such masterworks can be seen here as Michelangelo’s, Bernini’s, Bramante’s and Raffaello’s.

In one of the biggest Catholich church of the world it’s very hard to decide where to look, to discover every marbles, mosaics, works of art would take many hours. In grottos under the Basilica we can see tombs and sarkophagi of popes – allegedly includes St. Peter’s tomb. The entrance to the Basilica is free, but we suggest to pay attention what to wear. Strict rules apply for men and women, doesn’t allow to wear short skirt, short, sleeveless T-shirt.

The huge and imposing square in front of the Basilica also bears St. Peter’s name. The elliptical square is surrounded 13 m tall Doric column on both sides. Because of tourists the square is very busy all year round, but at Chrismas and Easter is much more crowdy. From all over the world hundreds of thousands of people come to hear the papal blessing. In the middle of the square stands an ancient obelisque, which was shipped here from the Egyptian Hieropolis, the Nile Delta region.

Altough the Sistine Chapel is always crowded, it worths to wait, because nobody shouldn’t leave Vatican City without visit the chapel with the frescoes which was created for 4 years by Michelangelo. His most important works can be seen here together with famous Renessaince paintings. The chapel not only home of priceless monuments and one of the world most famous attractions, but the Sistine Chapel, built in 1475-1481, has an important function: the papal elections take place here.

Sistine Chapel – Last Judgement

The Sistine Chapel is the part of Vatican Museum. This a complex collection of ancient Roman, Greek, Etrusc monuments, early Christians and medieval Renessaince masterpieces and other monuments until the 19th century. Sure we can’t visit everything in a single day, better if we select the most interesting collections before. Vatican Museum can be visit free on the last Sunday of every month.

Vatican Museum

Vatican city is a fascinating destination, so it’s a good idea to planning the sightseeing in advance, to make sure to visit the most important attractions. Vatican’s travel agency located on the left side of the St. Peter Square, best to start the walk here. In the tourist office we can buy maps, guidebooks, but also can book for a nice trip to the Vatican Gardens. Here we find the most beautiful examples of the 1500-1600’s years Italian gardening as well as Pope IV. Pius’s summer residence. If we would like to send a posctard home, use the Vatican Post which is more relieable than the Italian.
