Nestled in the heart of Honolulu, Hawaii lies Moanalua Gardens and its majestic Hitachi Tree. Those who venture through will find themselves surrounded by lush foliage, tranquil streams and a sense of peace that only nature can provide. But this spectacular garden has a mysterious history behind it, one that has been passed down from generation to generation. Moanaula Gardens, which is home to the annual “Prince Lot Hula Festival“.

Among various attractions, the main attraction here is a demonstration of the typical Hawaiian dance, the hula, named after Hawaiian Prince Lot Kapuaiwa, who later reigned as King Kamehaheha V. He was fond of entertaining his guests, including missionaries, with a show of hula dancers. The Moanaula Gardens was the king’s childhood home, and today it still contains many historic buildings and rare trees and plants.

The area is open to visitors for a small entrance fee, with proceeds going towards the care and maintenance of the park. However, the majority of the maintenance costs are paid for by the Japanese electronics company Hitachi, due to a special tree.

It is a beautiful, huge shaman tree with a distinctive umbrella-shaped canopy in a grassy area in the middle of the park. Its age is estimated at 160 years, and its canopy covers an area 40 metres in diameter. The City of Honolulu has designated the tree as a historic landmark and has placed it under protection. It has also become one of the most popular corporate symbols in Japan.

Since 1973, the Hitachi Group, now known as the Hitachi Tree, has used it as a symbol of its company worldwide. According to its website, it is a symbol of comprehensive leadership and broad business opportunities.

The company is one of the largest in Japan, a beloved and trusted brand. Thanks to this widespread recognition, Hitachi Fa has become very popular in the country. Almost every day, Japanese tourist buses arrive at the park for visitors to see and take photos with the tree.

The company originally paid $20,000 a year to the park’s original owner, Samuel Damon, to use the tree in their advertisements. After Damon’s death in 2004, the park became the property of a local company, Kaimana Ventures, who renegotiated the terms with Hitachi and raised the annual fee to $400,000.

According to Kaimana Ventures, this revenue will partially cover the $600,000 per year cost of maintaining the park.

Geysers have always fascinated humans, with their unique shapes and sizes that come in different forms. From Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park, to Jigokundani of Hell Valley in Japan, geysers have been the subject of interest for many. However, amongst all the geysers, the Fly Geyser in Washoe County, Nevada stands out to be the most unique of them all.

The Fly Geyser got its name from the location Fly Ranch where it is located. The ranch, like many others, was different when water started bursting out of the ground, creating Fly Reservoir, a small lake around Fly Geyser. This geyser, however, did not create itself. Wells in the area had been drilled since the early 1900s, but in 1964, a geothermal cavity deep in the ground was breached by a power company. They failed to properly cap the hole, and water started spewing in the Nevada desert.

What makes the Fly Geyser so unique is its appearance. The spout rises more than five feet above the ground and is made up of travertine, a calcium carbonate deposit, covered in rich, vibrant colors.

The spout gets its bright red, green, orange, and yellow hues from the abundant presence of thermolithic algae.

These organisms flourish in the hot desert amid the moist air from the geyser. The algae is present at other geysers, but it is usually in a pool and not in a large above-ground spout.

The thermophiles responsible for the vibrant colors are able to survive temperatures upwards of 252 °Ft or 122 °C, which usually kills off most other organisms. By looking at the spectrum of colors, we get an indication of its temperature. The red areas are the coolest, at 131 °F or 55 °C, the orange bacteria come in at 149 °F or 65 °C, and yellow at 165 °F or 74 °C. The aquamarine blue bacteria are living in water that is 189 °F or 87 °C.

The Amazon basin is one of the world’s most mysterious and largely unstudied regions, covering 7 million square kilometers, with 5.5 million square kilometers remaining mostly untouched by archaeologists. The preconception has long been that humans could not have flourished in the Amazon due to its challenging conditions and poor soil. However, recent evidence suggests otherwise. The clearances of the Amazon rainforest for soybean and cattle farms have led to the discovery of evidence of large cities and advanced civilizations that once existed in the area.

The first European to cross South America from west to east along the Amazon was Francisco de Orellana, who reported seeing incredible cities with advanced arts and crafts and millions of people. A hundred years later, when other Europeans explored the area, they could not find these cities and assumed that Francisco had made it all up. However, in recent years, the jungle has been cleared, revealing the cities that were once thought to be just a fantasy. The latest evidence suggests that there were cities in the Amazon with populations of 50,000, possibly totaling 20 million people across the entire region.

So, how did these people feed themselves in the Amazon, with its poor soil? The answer is that they invented a soil called Terra Preta, or Amazonian dark earths. This man-made soil, which is thousands of years old, is full of microbes not found in surrounding soil and is based on biochar. Terra Preta can instantly make barren soil fertile, and is highly sought after in the Amazon. It is still not understood by soil experts how this was done, but it is one of many pieces of evidence that suggest a much higher level of development in the Amazon than previously thought.

Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela), once a wealthy South American nation known for its vast oil reserves and bustling economy, has recently been making headlines for all the wrong reasons....

Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela), once a wealthy South American nation known for its vast oil reserves and bustling economy, has recently been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela, has been ranked as the most dangerous city on the planet multiple times, with a skyrocketing murder rate and widespread poverty leaving its residents struggling to survive. We will delve into the challenges faced by the people of Caracas as they navigate their daily lives in one of the world’s most dangerous cities.

The Crisis Unfolds

Venezuela’s descent into chaos can be traced back to the late 1990s, when the country was ruled by President Hugo Chávez. Chávez’s socialist policies and nationalization of key industries sent the economy into a tailspin, and by the time of his death in 2013, the country was already facing severe shortages of food, medicine, and other essential goods.

source: ted.com

The situation has only gotten worse since then, with the current president, Nicolás Maduroas, continuing Chávez’s legacy of mismanagement and corruption. The country’s economy has completely collapsed, leading to hyperinflation and a shortage of basic goods, including food, water, and electricity. This has led to widespread poverty and unemployment, with nearly 90% of the population living in poverty and more than a quarter of the workforce unemployed.

The Effects of Crime and Violence

The economic crisis in Venezuela has led to a surge in crime and violence, with Caracas being one of the hardest hit cities. The city has become a hotbed of criminal activity, with gangs and armed groups fighting for control of the streets. The result is a city where the average person is faced with the threat of robbery, kidnapping, or murder on a daily basis.

The situation has become so dire that even the police are considered to be part of the problem, with reports of widespread corruption and abuse of power. Many residents avoid calling the police, as they fear being subjected to even more violence at the hands of those supposed to protect them.

A Struggle for Survival

Despite the constant danger, life goes on in Caracas, and its residents have learned to adapt to the dangers that surround them. For many, this means relying on family and community to protect them, as they cannot rely on the government or law enforcement.

Many people have turned to informal economies to make a living, such as street vending or working in the black market, where they can earn a little money to support their families. However, these informal economies are not without their dangers, and many people are forced to work long hours for low pay, with the threat of violence and exploitation always looming.

The healthcare system has also been devastated by the crisis, with hospitals and clinics struggling to provide basic medical care. The shortage of medicine and medical supplies has led to an increase in preventable diseases and infections, and many people have been forced to seek medical treatment in other countries.

The Future of Venezuela

The situation in Venezuela is complex, and it is unlikely to change anytime soon. The government is unable or unwilling to address the root causes of the country’s problems, and the international community has been unable to find a solution. The country is facing a humanitarian crisis, with millions of people in desperate need of food, medicine, and basic necessities.

Despite the challenges, there is still hope for Venezuela. The country has a rich history and a strong culture, and its people are resilient and resourceful. However, it will take a concerted effort by the government, the international community, and the people of Venezuela themselves to bring about the changes that are desperately needed. Until then, life in the country will remain a constant struggle for survival.

Upper Yosemite Falls in Yosemite National Park, California, is one of the most spectacular sights in all of the United States. In the summer, the water flow dwindles to almost nothing, but in the spring during snow melt, the waterfall is overwhelming. Upper Yosemite Falls can be seen along the roadside at a number of viewpoints along Southside Drive. The best ones are at Cooks Meadow and Swinging Bridge, and it also can be seen along the trail to Lower Yosemite Falls.

For those with a lot of energy, it is a grueling 3 hour hike to the top of Upper Yosemite Falls. It is well worth the effort, however. The best views of the upper falls you will find a little ways past Columbia Rock, about 1.5 miles from the bottom. Also just past Columbia Rock, there is a little side trail on the right, just before you get your first view. Take it. It is a very short walk that leads to a single viewpoint of the upper, middle, and lower falls (it is the only viewpoint for the middle falls). If you continue up the trail, you will get some closer views of Upper Yosemite Falls. Then the trail continues to the top (another 2 hours of hiking). There is not really a good view of the upper falls at the top, though you can get to a scary ledge beside the waterfall, looking down to the bottom. There are awesome views of the valley from the top, and if you are there in the summer months, you can actually swim in Yosemite Creek at the top. Now that is refreshing after a grueling 3 hour hike! But in the spring, the creek is flowing far too fast.

Together with Lower Yosemite Falls (320 ft.) and the middle cascades (675 ft.), the total height of the waterfalls is 2425 ft., making this the one of the highest waterfalls in the world. It is often said to be the 5th highest, though actually there are quite a few others that are higher (unofficially). At any rate, it is easily the single best thing in a national park that has plenty of incredible sights to see.

If you like to lie back on a beach or jump up to a reggae beat, prepare to purchase your plane ticket: Any of the Bahamas islands are able to accommodate. Of course, the numerous white- and pink-sand beaches and the bright blue Caribbean Sea make up the main attractions. But travel writers suggest spending a day or two exploring Nassau, home to several duty-free shopping districts, several historic sites and a lively nightlife scene. If you tire of the beach quickly, you may want to stay on Paradise Island and take part in the many activities available at the Cove Atlantis.

//
google_ad_client = "ca-pub-0625988063903213"; /* nagy kép */ google_ad_slot = "6749174400"; google_ad_width = 336; google_ad_height = 280;

Beaches

The islands are home to numerous spectacular white-sand beaches, such as Cable Beach and Cabbage Beach, two of the most popular among travelers and experts.

Nature

Inagua National Park is a great place to see some of the islands’ colorful wildlife, including the world’s largest flock of flamingos. Other recommended active pursuits include fishing on the island of Bimini, hiking in Grand Bahama Island‘s Lucayan Caverns or snorkeling through one of the archipelago’s many coral reefs. Recent visitors agree that the best way to explore the underwater worlds surrounding the islands is to sign up for a diving tour with companies such as Dive Abaco! and Sunn Odyssey Divers.

[wzslider]

Sports & Leisure

If lazing on the beach gets a little boring, the Bahamas offer an array of water or land-based activities to keep you entertained. Among those activities, most recommend golf courses like the traveler-recommended Ocean Club, or swimming with sharks and dolphins (sometimes even within the grounds of an all-inclusive). The Atlantis Waterpark on Paradise Island is another must-do for that island’s visitors, especially those with families.

Historic Attractions

Most of the islands’ historic sites can be found in Nassau. Many recommend stopping by the Christ Church Cathedral and the Pirates of Nassau Museum before heading north to see the rock formations that some believe are remnants of the lost city of Atlantis.
Shopping

For the Bahamas’ best duty free shopping, travel writers say to look on New Providence Island‘s waterfront Bay Street or at Grand Bahama Island’s traveler-recommended Port Lucaya Marketplace.

Nightlife

If you really like nightlife, be prepared to island hop. New Providence Island’s Cable Beach or the small Paradise Island, off of Nassau, are the best places to be, especially during the high season. But you can test Lady Luck without feeding off of the energy of a large crowd; to do so, check out Paradise Island’s Casino at Atlantis Resort.

But despite the foreboding reputation, visitors today will find a place of amazing beauty with many colorful rocks and canyons, miles of pristine sand dunes, unique evaporative salt features and even a diverse range of wildlife. The park also contains many relics from a hundred and fifty years of history, which give an insight into the harsh life of the early settlers – borax and metal ore mines, ghost towns, charcoal kilns and other ruins. Petroglyphs and ancient foot-trails provide evidence of the Shoshone Indians who lived here even earlier.

The valley is a long, low depression set in largely barren and unpopulated country of desert plains and rocky ridges, east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is over 130 miles long, but only around 12 miles wide, running roughly north-south near the border with Nevada. From an elevation of 1000 meters at the north end, the land slopes down steadily and for 70 miles the floor is below sea level, reaching a low point of -282 feet (-86 meters) at Badwater, the lowest point in the Western hemisphere. The depth of the depression is partly responsible for the extreme high temperatures, which can exceed 130°F in summer. High, unvegetated mountains of sombre reddish colour flank the narrow valley on both sides; a few are high enough to have snow for many months of the year.

The protected area, proclaimed a National Monument in 1933, was extended in 1994 (by the Desert Protection Act) to include an additional 1200,000 acres, mainly in the little-visited northwest section, and was upgraded in status to a National Park; this now covers 3 million acres, making it the largest in the US outside Alaska. Nearly 550 square miles are below sea level. There are many interesting sites and viewpoints beside the paved roads, and a good selection of short to moderate trails, but the majority of the area is reachable only by 4WD tracks or long cross-country hikes, this latter possible only during winter and spring owing to the high temperatures and lack of water at other times.
